Dean of North Bar Association fined 50,000 lei for influence peddling

The Orhei District Court has found the dean of the North Bar Association guilty of influence peddling and fined him 50,000 lei, the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

The lawyer was arrested in late September after the investigation found that he had solicited and received 4,000 euros for influencing doctors at the Chisinau Psychiatry Hospital into issuing an assessment report on his client's mental health, who had been charged with premeditated murder and attempted murder. Part of the sum solicited from the client was found at the lawyer during a search.

The court dismissed the prosecution's request to additionally impose a ban on the lawyer from holding certain positions for a period of 3 years and the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office said it would appeal.
