Dean and department head of Physical Education University convicted of influence peddling

The dean of the Occupational Kinetotherapy Faculty of the State University of Physical Education and Sport and a department head were fined by over 112,000 lei each for influence peddling. Prosecutors intend to challenge the sentence as too mild, IPN reports.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the two claimed that they can influence lecturers of the University to positively assess the knowledge of a student who failed to take a number of exams in the third and fourth years of study, asking for €1,000 for their services. They promised the student will avoid expulsion and will obtain a gradation diploma.

The case was started last May after a student filed a complaint to the police. He passed on €800 to the two under the guidance of officers of the National Anticorruption Center, promising that the other €200 will be transmitted before the exams start.

The culprits accepted blame and asked for a simplified case examination procedure. The sentence can be disputed in the Chisinau Appeals Court within 15 days. The prosecutors plan to demand that the two should also be banned from holding administrative posts in educational institutions.
