On May's third Sunday, the world community commemorates the people having died because of being infected with HIV. On May 18 in Chisinau, candles in the memory of the ones having died because of AIDS will be lit in Stefan cel Mare Public Garden, Info-prim Neo reports. The president of the HIV Infected League, Igor Chilcevschi, told a news conference, on May 13, the number of the people dying because of this disease is growing in Moldova year by year, although the HIV/AIDS patients get adequate treatment. According to him, the rise of the number of people infected with HIV, especially in the rural areas, is favored by the people not protecting themselves. UNAIDS program expert Gabriela Ionascu opines the reproductive women represent a risk of HIV infected, as they account for 50 % of the number of new cases. According to statistics data, all the pregnant women infected, which are treated, have chances to give birth to healthy children. Yet, the treatment should be started before the 24th week of pregnancy. The total cost of the five medicines used for retroviral therapy for a person is about USD1,200, as about 600 Moldovans get free treatment now. Specialists say the only solution to decrease the number of infections is informing society. The HIV virus can be transmitted through blood, maternal milk, sperm and vaginal liquid. Since 1997, about 4,300 HIV infected people have been registered in Moldova, of which 500 have died. 730 newly infected with HIV/AIDS were recorded in 2007.
