Day of Nistru River marked May 28

The self-cleaning capacity of the Nistru River during the last three years decreased by 80% and six valuable species of fish appeared during the last five years. The dangers to which the river is exposed were presented in Parliament by MP Violeta Ivanov, ex-minister of environment, in the context of the approval of a statement by the legislature on the occasion of the Day of the Nistru, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of May, IPN reports.

Violeta Ivanov said the river reached such a state owing to the unwise actions of the population. The Nistru is the main source of water of the Republic of Moldova, which supplies 80% of the population with water. The Nistru water also plays a vital role in agriculture and tin he sustainable development of the country.

The Nistru springs in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, near the border with Poland, and has also transfrontier importance. The river is an exceptional national source of water due to the unique biodiversity that is protected by the national legislation.
