The Superior Council of Magistrates (CSM) on Tuesday authorized the General Assembly of Judges to take place on October 23. The date however is subject to change depending on the epidemiological situation.
CSM acting president Anatol Pahopol, who is only an alternate member, said the Assembly is to elect one permanent member-judge to the Council so that the Council can eventually pick a permanent president.
At the same meeting, the Assembly is to elect four members to the Judicial Selection and Career Board and two members to the Evaluation Panel, both of which are specialized bodies of the CSM.
Last year, after the CSM rejected the request to convene the Assembly, a group of dissenting judges assembled on September 27. They decided to revoke all the six judges sitting on the Council, a decision which the Council challenged in court. A new Assembly had to take place on October 25 to elect replacements for the six members revoked, but the meeting didn’t have a quorum. In January 2020, the Council convened the Assembly for March 13, but it was postponed as the pandemic kicked in.
