MEP Monica Macovei said that the danger for Moldova is now acute following the request by the leader of the so-called Transnistrian supreme soviet to consider the possibility of joining Transnistria to Russia. The official considers that Russia wants to block Moldova’s integration into the EU, IPN reports, quoting a statement by the MEP.

Monica Macovei says it is a priority for Moldova to sign the Association Agreement with the EU and for the EU to integrate Moldova. “I remind that today European Commissioner for Enlargement Štefan Füle said that as a result of the recent events, the EU may decide to rapidly integrate Moldova,” she stated.

The MEP considers that these are the only real and courageous solutions that can defend Moldova and can ensure stability and democracy in the region. These solutions will strengthen the credibility of the Union in its power to take decisions and respond rapidly. The EU must react with determination and must send a very clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. It’s not the moment to keep silent and the neutrality as dictatorship and military aggression are knocking at the door and democracy and freedom are in danger.
