World Teachers’ Day was proclaimed by UNESCO on October 5 to celebrate the work of teachers. Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun approved of the dedication, patience and perseverance of the teaching staff despite the difficulties faced by the educational system of Moldova, IPN reports.
In a message intended for teachers, professors and educators, the minster expressed his gratitude for the effort made by them each day to educate the young generation. “Your role is crucial when we speak about the modeling of the present and future of this country. Only together we can build a prosperous, peaceful, solidary, free and strong society,” stated Dan Perciun.
The minister expressed his gratitude to teachers, noting that under the pressure of a changing world, namely the teachers ensure stability and the continuity of the cultural and spiritual values inherited from our ancestors. “At the same time, I thank you for being willing to learn modern teaching practices so as to meet the teaching needs of the current students. I’m confident that you will manage to contribute to developing and realizing the potential of our children so that these become decent citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The team of the Ministry of Education and Research will make every effort to support you on this not at all easy path,” stated Dan Perciun.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 46,300 teachers work in Moldova’s educational system at present. Over 86% of these are women. The average monthly salary of teachers is 8,417 lei. Most of the teachers work in primary and secondary education - over 56%. Some 8% of the teachers in primary and secondary education are younger than 30, while almost 21% are aged 60 years and over. Almost 2,700 teachers of those working in primary and secondary education are Romanian language and literature teachers, slightly over 2,600 are foreign languages teachers, while slightly over 1,800 are math teachers.
