Dan Dungaciu: Moldova’s entry into NATO is not on agenda of public discussions in Chisinau

Director of the Institute of Political Sciences and International Relations of the Romanian Academy Dan Dungaciu said the situation in Moldova is difficult because there is no well-defined agenda of integration into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. “The theme of Moldova’s entry into NATO is a taboo one and is not on the agenda of public discussions. An important role in this respect is played by the journalists, who must inform the population about all the aspects related to the integration into NATO,” the geo-politician said in the “School of Foreign Policy Journalists” that was staged by the Black Sea University Foundation in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Dan Dungaciu said the integration into NATO will not be carried out without identifying the European belonging of a state. “There are three stages that must be covered consecutively: realization of the European belonging, integration into NATO and then integration into the European Union. Romania went through all these consecutive stages. The question is to what extent does the Republic of Moldova assume a European course similar to the course of its neighbors after 1989s? In that period, there were parties in Romania and in other states that wanted to take the country to the Eastern area, but the population had the capacity to transmit messages to the West,” he stated.

Ambassador Sergiu Celac, who is a founding member of the Black Sea University Foundation, said that serious changes occurred all over the world during the last 25 years. The tendency to apply simple, violent solutions to international problems increases exponentially. “The United Nations is no longer perceived as an institution of the wise. It is often ignored. The same happens to the international law. Since 2008, the international law has been used to provide explanations for particular violations. But for the small countries, the international law is the only shield,” said the diplomat.

On October 15-17, more than 30 journalists and students of the faculties of journalism, international relations, public administration and political sciences have attended the “School of Foreign Policy Journalists– 2015”. The training course is financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, the Policy Department for Relations with Romanians Abroad.
