Daily intake of salt is exceeded only by eating bread

Bread is the main source of salt in the eating regime. A person daily eats on average 333 grams of bread that contains 5.5 grams of salt. The World Health Organization recommends taking in 5 grams of salt a day. Each 100 grams of bread contribute 1.85 grams of salt on average, shows a study launched in Chisinau on November 13, IPN reports.

According to the study, almost 55% of the population consume bread at each meal of the day. The figure among villagers stands at 61.6%. The white bread is the most popular one, being preferred by over 78% of the Moldovans. 20.4% prefer black bread, while 1.3% cereal bread.

To reduce the intake of salt among the population, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection intends to implement a nationwide program. This will include campaigns to raise the people’s awareness and to encourage them to adopt a more friendly approach to their health.

Legislative proposals will be formulated to set a framework for the food industry so as to reduce the intake of salt. It will also be suggested introducing labels so as to emphasize the content of salt in food products.
