The changes and transformation cannot be brought from outside. Consequently, Moldova needs the tenacious support of its people for these changes to be brought about, the UN Resident Coordinator in Chisinau Dafina Gercheva stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN. Dafina Gercheva stated that Moldova needs inspired leaders able to conduct and to support these changes.
“We must take into account the fact that changes are not made overnight. Persistence is needed. Powerful political will and everyone’s contribution is needed. It is also necessary for the people to realize that they have rights and also responsibilities. So, they must ask for changes and must also contribute to their realization,” said the UN Resident Coordinator.
Dafina Gercheva noted that during the last 25 years, since Moldova gained independence, a lot has been done, but there are yet many challenges ahead. To ensure the full protection of human rights, the respect for these must be among the priorities of the government. It is also important to ensure efficient inter-ministerial coordination and political will must exist for the shortcomings and problems that cause concern, with regard to the human rights, to be taken into consideration and appropriate actions to be promoted, including financing for their implementation.
According to the UN Resident Coordinator, it is very important for Moldova to advance at an accelerated pace on the path of reforms, and not only in the justice sector, but also outside it. There must be certainty that the country not only has an Association Agreement with the European Union, but is also ready to start to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
