Former MPs of the Dignity and Truth (DA) Platform are urging the new administration, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the country's declaration of independence, to take genuine action for the benefit of war veterans and volunteers. At a press conference, Chiril Moțpan and Stela Macari cited several initiatives, which were launched in the previous legislature, in support of veterans.
The MPs called for free health insurance, regardless of occupational status, an increase in monthly payments and the creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The DA Platform also urged the new leadership to restore the benefits for veterans of the 1992 War of Independence on the Dniester, which was adopted by the first parliament.
Chiril Moțpan said that war veterans have a similar role for Moldova as the first Parliament, which voted for independence. War veterans protected it. "We no longer want politicians to remember veterans on festive occasions only. The current administration should know that war veterans and volunteers are still stoically enduring poverty, health problems, social marginalization and the effects of PTSD", said the former chairman of the Parliament's Committee for national security, defense and public order.
Stela Macari said that the purpose of the Department of Veterans Affairs is to ensure policy implementation, protect veteran rights, provide social guaranties, monitoring and cooperation with veterans' associations, so that the law is applied fairly to all groups of veterans.
