Cutezatorul Association holds seminars on reduction of pollution in Danube river

The Cutezatorul Association organised an international seminar themed Implementation of Good Agricultural Practices – Important Factor for Reduction of Pollution with Nutrients of Danube Hydrographical Basin, in the city of Floresti on Friday, March 24. The seminar aimed to inform farmers, economic agents working in agriculture sector, representatives of local public administration and civil society about problems related to pollution of the Danube river hydrographical basin and reduction of pollution by applying good agricultural practices favourable to environment. According to Cutezatorul executive director Vitalie Cimpoies, decisive measures are needed to implement the quality of surface waters and eliminate pollution hotbeds in the region. According to representatives of the Centre of Preventive Medicine, about 64 tons of expired pesticides are stored under inappropriate conditions in the Falesti district. Also, about 37 unauthorised depots with more than 25,000 cubic metres of animal refuse or household waste have been discovered in 12 localities on the left bank of the Proute river. Findings of controls in more than 150 wells in localities in the Danube basin indicated nitrates, nitrites and ammoniac that exceed the sanitary norms 14-fold. The concentration of phosphates and components of nitrogen in the rivers Camenca, Sovatul Mare, Sovatul Mic and Sovatul de Jos, tributaries of the Proute river is from 0.5 up to 7-fold higher than maximal norm. Taking part in the seminar were representatives of the Euroconcept Association and Agency for Environment Protection based in Botosani, as well as experts of the Station for Research and Development of Vegetables and Agricultural Consulting Office in Bacau. Romanian experts studied the experience and knowledge about reduction of pollution level of the Danube basin. That was the second out of five seminars which will be organised this year within the project implemented by Cutezatorul, with the assistance of UNDP and Global Environment Fund.
