Moldova's Customs Service during the first six months of this year examined 143 legal cases, including 116 contraband cases and 21 cases of customs tax evasion, Info Prim Neo reports. “The contraband over January-June this year totaled 4.47 million lei, while the unpaid customs duties - 1.2 million lei,” the head of the Customs Service Tudor Balitski said. The cigarettes remain the most smuggled merchandise. The Customs Service in the period seized goods to the value of 600,000 lei and imposed fines of 5.448 million lei. The customs duties collected over six months rose by 856 million lei. The Service also held 20 internal inquiries over violation of the discipline at work. Consequently, 38 customs employees were sanctioned, while seven dismissed.
