Customs incident involving Alexandru Petkov discussed in Parliament

The head of the Customs Service’s Law Implementation Department Iurie Ceban Thursday reported in Parliament on the customs incident that involved Communist MP Alexandru Petkov, Info-Prim Neo reports. Iurie Ceban said that on March 15, customs officers of the Moldovan-Ukrainian checkpoint Mirnoe-Tabaki saw boxes in the Communist lawmaker’s car and asked him to provide explanations. The MP refused to fill out the customs declaration, insulting the customs officers. He said he held a diplomatic passport and thus should not be checked. He took his documents and left the customs control area without permission. In about 30 minutes, the lawmaker returned to the customs post and left the identification papers there. “The MP told the press that he brought ten megaphones into the country, but the Customs Service cannot say what kind of goods and in what volume he carried as the goods were not declared. Such cases represent a violation of the customs rules and the goods can be regarded as contraband if their value exceeds 50,000 lei,” said Iurie Ceban. Under the Customs Code, the personal baggage of the President of Moldova and the family members who accompany him and the diplomats, foreign consular officials working in Moldova and the family members who live with them and are not citizens of Moldova are not subject to customs inspection. MP Alexandru Petcov was to declare the goods transported over the customs border and to allow the customs officers to check his car.
