Five customs brokers were arrested on active corruption charges. They are suspected of trying during many months to corrupt customs officers of the Petricani internal customs posts by transmitting different sums of money to them for hastening the procedure for validating customs declarations, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center, the brokers were caught inside the customs post when they were passing on documents accompanying the goods together with the money to customs officers.

As a result of searches carried out at the customs post and at brokers’ offices on May 26, 11 persons, six of who customs officers and five brokers, were escorted to the NAC for additional questioning. Five brokers were arrested for 72 hours.

The persons are investigated for active corruption and face up to six years in jail and fines of 100,000 to 200,000 lei.
