Customers harmed by MAIB theft support government to assume responsibility

The group of clients harmed by the theft from Moldova-Agroindbank fully supports the Sandu Government assuming the responsibility for modifying the Law on the Prosecutor's Office. They said that they have decided to issue this message as a result of their own experience over the course of the last four months. The prejudiced clients said that although there is a formal law on the prosecutor's office and guarantees for the exercise of the general prosecutor's mandate are in place, there is no rule of law. In their opinion, the government's initiative comes as an absolute novelty for the country and at the same time it is a good start for the establishment of the rule of law.

In an IPN press conference, Veaceslav Șevciuc, the representative of about 20 clients who were harmed by the MAIB theft, said that some former prosecutors applied non-transparent methods. According to him, although there are many prosecutors with integrity in the prosecutor's office, who responsibly perform their duties, there still are elements that hold on to past methods and attitudes, namely corruption, dependence on interest groups and disregard for the fundamental rights of citizens.

"We have experienced these things by ourselves over the course of the last few months. Let us be clear: this is not a rhetorical device. It is a cruel truth that we have faced. If anyone thinks that this topic only concerns debates and TV shows, they are wrong. Anyone could have been in our shoes. Once you find yourself in the situation that you have lost everything you gained over the course of your lifetime, you expect that law enforcement bodies will swiftly and categorically defend you. However, over time you notice that the system does not work for the citizen. Everything is decided behind your back. We no longer accept such a state of affairs, which is why we strongly support the Sandu government initiative", said Veaceslav Șevciuc.

According to him, the situation is not an ordinary one and requires an unusual temporary solution. The Venice Commission noted Moldova's special situation, given the conditions of a captured state, and approved the adoption of special measures to overcome this situation. According to the harmed customers, "what the Sandu government puts forward is in line with the high European standards set by the group of states against corruption (GRECO)".

"We support the initiative of the Sandu government, based on the sincere and devoted desire to build a state trully based on rule of law. This is our understanding of the initiative: People in government no longer want to hold government positions if the independence of the justice system is at stake. We don't want to go back into the past. Our choice is to have a state based on rule of law and on values, which prioritizes the future of our children", said Veaceslav Șevciuc.

According to him, at the meeting of the clients with Prime Minister Maia Sandu, the head of the executive was asked whether the rule of law is established in Moldova. "Her reply was: Not today, however, we are doing our best in order to establish it. We wish her luck in this regard. She has our trust and our support", said Veaceslav Șevciuc.
