Current protests rather favor government, sociologist

The protests staged in central Chisinau favor the current government rather than disfavor it, said Romanian sociologist Dan Dungaciu. In a news conference hosted by IPN, the Romanian expert said the protests mounted by the Shor Party contribute to the improvement of the popular approval rating of the ruling party as they show what the alternative to the current government is.

According to Dan Dungaciu, the Shor Party’s protests only improve the image of PAS and President Maia Sandu. Society can see by contrast who can take over governance if the administration is changed.

“We see protest and revolt potential. We see the protest potential if we walk through central Chisinau but with paradoxical results. On the one hand, we see potential of political riposte to the Government in Chisinau. On the other hand, by the polarization produced by the protests, we have a kind of protection that the Government gained without necessarily wanting this. In the current protests, the alternative to the current government is mirrored. The alternative to the ruling party is the people who protest in central Chisinau. By contrast, this favors rather than disfavors the government,” stated Dan Dungaciu.

He noted that the protests downtown offer protection to the current administration as the people who are not satisfied with the Government’s work do not want to be associated with the image of the Shor Party and its leader
. The protesting people bear a stigma. They are called the people of Shor – a personage who hides in Israel and manipulates internal policy from there.

According to the last public opinion poll carried out by the company CBS Research, if parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, the configuration of the new legislative body would not change significantly. The Party of Action and Solidarity would gain 28.3% of the vote, the Party of Socialists – 22.5%, the Shor Party – 9.3%, while the Party of Communists – 4.4%.
