Current political crisis is artificial, ordinary and with purifying effect, debates

The current political crisis in Moldova is natural and even beneficial for society as it has a purifying effect on the political class, considers Liberal-Democratic MP George Mocanu and Liberal MP Valeriu Saharneanu. On the other hand, Communist MP Artur Reshetnikov believes that it is an artificial crisis caused by the parties of the former ruling alliance. Related opinions were stated in public debates themed “Culture of the political crisis: realities, necessities and norms” that were staged at IPN on March 19.

Liberal lawmaker Valeriu Saharneanu said the current political crisis is something ordinary. It is a problem that must be dealt with by Moldovan society that is penetrated by a multitude of interests. “We are facing an ordinary crisis related to Moldova’s European course. We have precedents. It is a crisis that cannot be administered by the old system because we still preserve Soviet elements,” he stated.

Valeriu Saharneanu shares the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu’s opinion that the crisis was caused by the Lib-Dem Vlad Filat. He said the Liberals cannot forgive him for denouncing the agreement on the formation of the ruling alliance.

Vlad Filat’s party colleague George Mocanu said that when the politicians come to power with promises, they must have powers to fulfill them. “When you come to power in a destroyed country and must reform many things and the reforms are not understood, you do not manage to implement them in two years,” he stated.

George Mocanu considers that the effects of the current political crisis are both positive and negative. “The crisis is a purification method. The politicians are in a crisis of ideas and in a crisis of personality. This crisis revealed unknown things. However, owing to such public debates, the population’s level of political culture increases,” said the Liberal-Democratic MP.

Artur Reshetnikov said the bomb under the alliance was planted when the agreement and the secret annexes were signed. “In a democratic state such institutions as the Ministry of the Interior, the legal system and the secret services cannot be distributed between those in power. The electoral promises haven’t been fulfilled during three years. They only give orders by phone and resort to smuggling and corruption,” he stated, adding the people should be allowed to decide who should rule the country in early legislative elections.

Permanente expert at the IPN debates Igor Botan said that the political crisis became something usual for the people. “When we have different players, there appear disagreements and, if they are unable to deal with them, they turn into tensions and then into conflicts. If the conflicts cannot be resolved they lead to a state of crisis,” he said.

Expert Ion Jigau, director of the Center of Sociological Investigations and Marketing CBS-AXA, said the voters are waiting for the politicians to fulfill their duties, but in Moldova no government has done this appropriately. “The politicians are discontented that the political leaders cannot reach a compromise. There are surely interests, but when an alliance is formed, a solution should be identified to suit everyone. But they haven’t yet reached such a level of political culture,” he stated.

The debates “Culture of the political crisis: realities, necessities and norms” is the 13th of the series of public debates organized by IPN News Agency within the project “Development of political culture by public debates”, which is supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation.
