Cupcini Sugar Refinery to be taken over by Polish company
A publicly owned Polish sugar company will acquire the assets of the Cupcini Sugar Refinery under a takeover agreement. The expected investment of several million euros will enable the factory to rehabilitate its production of raw material, improve relations with sugar beet producers and increase sugar output and exports. The issue was discussed at the second session of the intergovernmental Moldova-Poland Commission on Economic Cooperation, which took place on, Thursday, April 14 in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Dariusz Bogdan, Undersecretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Economy and also co-chairman of the Moldova-Poland Commission, said the agreement is to be signed soon. He said that the relevant Polish authorities are ready to offer technical assistance and counseling to Moldova in aligning the legislation and procedures on standardization with the European market requirements, and also in promoting other reforms to enhance the competitiveness of Moldovan products on the European markets.
Gheorghe Duca, the Moldovan co-chairman and also the president of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences, said the Thursday's session addressed issues discussed earlier by the Moldovan and the Polish prime ministers at their recent meeting. These include economic and humanitarian cooperation and also conveyance of Poland's Eurointegration experience. The members of the Commission also discussed the opportunity of opening new terrestrial and air transport routes, including by involving third countries.
There are a number of bilateral conventions facilitating cooperation with Poland: the 2007 Economic Cooperation Agreement, the 1995 Convention on avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion, the 1995 Agreement on promotion and reciprocal protection of investment, etc.
Poland is Moldova's 9th partner in terms of overall trade, 7th in terms of exports and 10th in terms of imports. In 2010 trade with Poland amounted to $151.8 million, up 12.5% on 2009. Moldova exports food and alcoholic drinks to Poland, including wine (26.1% of the total), and textiles (34.9%).
