Cultivation of industrial hemp will be permitted

Farmers in Moldova will be able to grow industrial hemp. An initiative to regulate the cultivation of this crop was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday. According to the authorities, Cannabis Sativa has an extremely low content of the active substance responsible for psychotropic effects and cannot be used as a narcotic in any form, IPN reports.

"The initiative to regulate the cultivation of industrial hemp has multiple benefits for agriculture, the environment and the economy. Industrial hemp is a versatile crop used in textiles, construction, cosmetics, biofuels, food and medicine. Through the production and processing of industrial hemp, Moldova can develop a circular economy, which will help reduce waste and use every part of the plant, be it as fiber, fuel or building material," said Sergiu Gherciu, secretary general of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.

He noted that it is essential for the citizens to know that Cannabis Sativa has an extremely low content of the active substance responsible for psychotropic effects, and the concentration is so low that the plant cannot be used as a narcotic.

"Farmers who want to grow industrial hemp will have to obtain permits, and the entire cultivation process will be monitored, the legal framework being regulated. The approval of this bill will bring only advantages without compromising public safety and is an initiative awaited by many farmers," said Sergiu Gherciu.
