Culma - Ceadîr-Lunga railroad section operative again

Movement on the Culma - Ceadîr-Lunga railroad section was resumed on Monday evening. Six wagons carrying grain derailed last Saturday as extremely high temperature caused the rails to lose their strength, IPN reports.

The state-run company Moldova’s Railways said that works were performed nonstop to repair the damaged section. During 38 hours, 50 people worked in two shifts to mend everything.

The six derailed wagons were redirected and a railroad section of about 125 meters was rebuilt during the shortest period of time possible. “The rehabilitated section was tested yesterday evening. Also yesterday, this section was used by the first freight train, according to schedule. The section is accessible to trains that will transport freight, including from and to the Reni Port,” the company noted in a press release.

The extent of damage and cause of the accident will be determined when the investigation commissions and experts complete their work.

Six grain cars derailed on August 5 as extreme heat weakened the rails. The 61-car train was travelling from the Basarabeasca Station to the Ukrainian transport hub Reni situated on the Danube.
