CSM proposes President to reconsider rejected judicial appointment

The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) today voted to nominate again Veronica Cupcea as investigative judge in Orhei district until statutory retirement, proposing President Nicolae Timofti to review his earlier decision to reject the appointment, Info-Prim Neo reports. In rejecting the appointment, Nicolae Timofti argued that Veronica Cupcea had been the subject of a disciplinary probe for alleged breach of impartiality and other violations. The disciplinary proceedings, initiated by Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubco, were suspended by the Disciplinary Committee. The decision was appealed by the Prosecutor General and today the CSM rejected the appeal, making Veronica Cupcea eligible again for nomination. Also today, the CSM rejected the repeated application by Serghei Bodiu to be appointed as investigative judge in Ocnita until statutory retirement. Earlier President Nicolae Timofti rejected Serghei Bodiu's candidacy, after a verification of his property revealed that he had business relations with third parties, which is incompatible with the position of a judge and contradicting professional ethics. Initially judges are appointed for a term of 5 years, after which their tenure may be extended by presidential decree until statutory retirement.
