CSM offered resignation compensations to 5 judges this year

In seven months of this year, the Superior Council of Magistracy has offered a total 793,000 lei in compensation to five judges, including President Nicolae Timofti, after they resigned or left their posts for other objective reasons. Earlier their year, the CSM offered 111,000 to the family of Judge Alexandru Negru, who served as deputy chair of the Soroca District Court, after he died due to sickness. The family of Judge Violeta Visanu of the Orhei District court also received 108,000 following her death in July 2011. The CSM also satisfied two applications for compensation from two judges who resigned from the Causeni District Court. Petru Grumeja will get nearly 73,000 lei and Gheorghe Marchitan slightly over 101,000 lei, if Parliament agrees that their resignation was honorable. On Wednesday the Government approved the CSM's decision to grant 400,000 lei in compensation to President Nicolae Timofti, who prior to his election had served for 35 years in the judicial system. The Law on Judicial Status allows judges to seek compensation when they honorably resign before statutory retirement. The amount of the one-off compensation is equal to the average monthly salary multiplied by the number of years worked as a judge. CSM spokesperson said that Parliament is the one that has the final say on this matter, adding however that he doesn't remember any case of such applications being rejected. Compensations are offered only after establishing that the judge resigned honorably and didn't affect the reputation of the judiciary.
