Cristina Iovu and Anatol Ciricu named Athletes of the Year

Weightlifters Cristina Iovu and Anatol Ciricu were named Moldova's Best Athletes of the Year at the Moldovan Sports Gala on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. Cristina Iovu took the bronze in the 53kg division at this summer's Olympic Games in London and the gold at the 2012 European Weightlifting Championships. Anatol Ciricu also took the Olympic bronze in the 94kg category and became European champion. Top 10 athletes also included hammer thrower Zalina Marghiev, steeplechaser Ion Luchianov, archer Dan Olaru, boxer Vasile Belous, wrestler Svetlana Saenko, judoka Sergiu Toma, freestyle wrestler Nicolae Ceban, and weightlifter Alexandru Dudoglo. Weightlifting coach Sergiu Cretu was named the Coach of the Year and the national rugby team became the Best Team of the Year for their performance at the European Nations Cup. Freestyle wrestler Victor Ciobanu was named the Talent of the Year and the national K-1 team were named the Discovery of the Year. Special awards for remarkable merits in the development of the Moldovan sports were confered on coaches Nicolae Oriol and Gheorghe Gutu. Overall, more than 100 athletes were awarded at the Sports Gala for their international performances in 2012.
