The Republic of Moldova goes through a critical period that some of the European officials consider as irreversible, former Vice President of the Romanian Senate Cristian Diaconescu, who held a number of posts of minister in the Cabinet in Bucharest, said in the talk show “European horizon” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

According to Diaconescu, the forecasts for Moldova are gloomy. “The Republic of Moldova is shaken by corruption scandals and is slipping towards a descendent and dramatic track, while the regional context, which is to its detriment, makes the situation more complicated. The western part of Europe is now focused on something else. If in winter the country does not have a government to make sure that the pensions and salaries are paid and that the necessary energy resources are available, the people will massively take to the streets. Anything can happen amid a regional crisis,” stated the official.

Diaconescu does not rule out the possibility that Romania could stop supporting Moldova if this turns to the East. “The official Bucharest will review its attitude. We cannot cheat each other. We know that each Romanian high-ranking official pays the first official visit abroad to Moldova. This speaks about the seriousness of the Romanian state towards Moldova,” he stated.

The ex-Vice President of the Romanian Senate made it clear that the EU could restore the visa requirements for Moldovans. “It’s known that half of the Moldovan citizens plead for joining the Customs Union. Society there should realize the opportunities provided by the EU. The free movement of the Moldovans in the EU could become a problem,” he stated.

Diaconescu noted that investing a technocratic government supported by Parliament is a solution for Moldova. “Moldova needs a powerful and credible government that would implement reforms. But there should be a parliamentary majority that will support this government,” he said.
