The new government of Moldova must implement the Association Agreement with the EU and must start to do real reforms so as to unlock the direct support from the development partners, considers former Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, this said the instability in Moldova generates regional instability, IPN reports.

“Given the priorities, first of all the political ones, it’s clear that an instrumental government must exist in Moldova. This should be able to have a dialogue and cooperate with the financial institutions, with the European states,” said Cristian Diaconescu.

The former minister noted that in rather difficult internal political conditions, Moldova signed yet the Association Agreement with the EU and obtained a liberalized visa regime with the EU. “Surely, the fact that US$1 billion disappeared from the banks of Moldova at a certain moment and thus serious problems are faced in paying pensions and salaries and the foreign financial assistance was blocked can be blamed on the same political class,” stated Cristian Diaconescu.

He added that the Republic of Moldova is located on the border with NATO and the EU and, from this viewpoint, it is evident that the states forming part of these alliances are highly concerned about the developments in Moldova, the crisis in Ukraine and the situation in the Black Sea Basin.

Referring to the recent visit paid to Bucharest by the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland, the Romanian politician said this visit shows there is great concern about the instability in the Republic of Moldova, which generates security instability in the region.

Cristian Diaconescu wants the Moldovan politicians to be disciplined and to take part in the building of a modern state, based on the rule of law, freedoms, democracy and free market economy and to be as categorically as possible against any form of corruption, especially endemic corruption at political level.
