Criminal penalties to be introduced for public media censorship

The Government has approved amendments to the Criminal Code proposed by MP Mihai Godea that introduce penalties for engaging in censorship and obstructing the work of public media organizations by their management or persons in positions of authority, Info-Prim Neo reports. As defined by the note accompanying the proposed amendments, censorship is the authoritative effort to distort journalistic materials, restrict the dissemination of information of public interest and other unlawful actions aimed at filtering information. Such actions committed by managers of public media organizations will be punished by fines ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 lei with a potential ban on certain jobs for up to 3 years. The fines for obstructing the work of a media organization or of its employee, influencing the content of materials, persecuting journalists for publishing information related to the work of public officials or other persons in positions of authority will range from 6,000 to 12,000 lei with a potential ban on certain jobs for up to 3 years. The amendments are a follow-up to the 2010 Law on Freedom of Expression.
