Crime rate up 11.3% in Chisinau
Over the period January-September 2008, crime rates have risen in 11 administrative units of Moldova, including Chisinau municipality, Info-Prim Neo learned from the Prosecutor General's Office.
Significant rises in crime rates were recorded in the districts of Briceni (+18.0%), Hancesti (+17.7%), Calarasi (+4.1%), Ialoveni (+11.2%), Soroca (+10.3%), Straseni (+8.6%), and Orhei (+5.0%).
Chisinau municipality has seen a rise in crime rate of as much as 11.3% compared with the similar period last year. The worst affected parts of Chisinau are the districts of Ciocana and Buiucani, with rises of 26.3% and 18.7%, respectively. In Botanica and Centru the increases were moderate, and only in Rascani district the crime rate was seen dropping 1.0%.
In the first nine months of this year there were recorded 160 murders and homicides, 266 cases of grievous bodily harm, 225 rapes, and 9,411 crimes against property, including 131 burglaries, 719 robberies, 683 cases of fraud, 7,213 thefts, etc.
The types of crimes which rose the most are the following: facilitation and organization of illegal migration (98%), military offenses (20.8%), rapes (12.5%), other sexual offenses (12.1%), and murders (3.8%).
The types of crimes which reduced in number during the mentioned period are the following: gang perpetrated crimes (60.4%), smuggling (48.6%), trafficking in human beings (14.2%), grievous bodily harm (6.3%), crimes perpetrated by persons in position of authority, including corruption and related offenses (1.7%), etc.
