Crime rate 5.4% up in 2016

As many as 41,900 offences were recorded in Moldova last year, an increase of 5.4% on a year before, IPN reports.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the largest number of offenses was committed in towns, especially in the municipality of Chisinau (182 offenses per 10,000 people) and Balti municipality (128 offenses per 10,000 people). 

Each fifth offense was an exceptionally serious, very serious or serious offense. Each fourth offense was committed in public places, while each sixth offense was committed by working age people who were yet out of job.

The ratio of female offenders was of 71 to 100,000, while of male offenders of 951 to 100,000. The men were mainly involved in offenses related to transport, acts of hooliganism and domestic violence, while the women in thefts, offenses related to drugs and swindles.

The offenses committed by minors decreased by 5.7%, especially as regards sex-related offenses. The minors committed mainly thefts.

A number of 27 persons are convicted on average a day. Of these, 25 are men. Compared with 2015, the number of convicted persons declined by 141%.
