CReDO urges Sunday demonstrators to refrain from provocations
The Human Rights Resource Center (CReDO) is recommending the Civic Platform “Actiunea 2012” and the Moldovan Patriots Party to refrain from any provocations that may foment unrest, it said in a statement.
CReDO noted that both organizations followed all notification procedures and the stated goals of their rallies didn't contravene the Law on Assemblies. Therefore, there is no ground to prohibit them.
CReDO denounces some politicians' calls for the restriction or prohibition of peaceful assemblies, in particular the Socialists' proposed legal provisions that would introduce a ban on peaceful assemblies that promote opinions on political and constitutional matters. CReDO also regrets the presence of calls and statements by Social-Democratic Party members and supporters, which foster violence and non-democratic practices against peaceful assemblies.
The NGO further calls on the demonstrators from both sides to follow the pre-established routes and refrain from any behaviors capable of offending, inciting or provoking hostile reactions among each other.
CReDO is pleased with the police's behavior so far, hoping that they will be able to ensure the normal progress of the events scheduled for Sunday.
A group of activists promoting unification with Romania, calling themselves the Civic Platform “Actiunea 2012”, will stage an Unification March in Chisinau on Sunday. Similar earlier events in Cahul and Balti ended in clashes with counter-demonstrators representing different political parties.
