COVID Center at Moldexpo will be closed soon, minister

The COVID Center at Moldexpo will be closed the next few days. All the patients were transferred to other hospitals and only three-four beds for intensive care were kept. All the countries renounced such models long ago and the situation and experience of the systems is now different, said Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco being quoted by IPN.

Presenting a report in Parliament in the evening of November 18, Ala Nemerenco said she paid a surprise visit to the COVID Center at Moldexpo and saw that this became a mega-hospital with over 400 beds for treating cases of COVID-19 and 37 intensive care beds, even if it was initially planned as a COVID triage center.

“For comparison, the National Clinical Hospital that has almost 100 beds has a very modern intensive therapy section with only 45 beds. During the pandemic, the section was supplemented with only several beds. This Center included 37 intensive care beds at a time when the conditions there were not the best ones,” stated the minister.

Ala Nemerenco noted each patient on an intensive care bed had by an oxygen cylinder. If we take the 37 beds together, which is 37 oxygen cylinders, plus the cylinders kept in the stores at a very short distance, a large-scale tragedy could have experienced if an explosion had occurred there due to the smallest technical fault. Engineered said that an eventual blast would have destroyed one third of Buiucani district.

In such conditions that were far from any standards, the doctors and other medical staff worked miracles indeed, saving thousands of lives, said the minister, expressing her gratitude to them.

The COVID Center at Moldexpo was opened in the summer of 2020.
