The COVID-19 vaccination rate in the municipality of Chisinau is 60-65% together with the persons who got vaccinated abroad, primarily in Romania. “This figure is close to the immunization coverage of 70% that is recommended by the World Health Organization for ensuring herd immunity, but we must make effort to inform and sensitize the population to the benefits of immunization,” mayor Ion Ceban stated in the ordinary meeting of officials of municipal services. If only the persons immunized in the country are taken into account, the vaccination rate in Chisinau is 46%, IPN reports.
Specialists ascertain a decline in the intensity of the wave of infections caused by the Omicron variant. Therefore, a number of COVID-19 wards in Chisinau were closed. Last week, four of the five COVID-19 wards opened earlier at the Municipal Children’s Hospital “V. Ignatenco” were closed. At Saint Trinity Hospital, four COVID-19 sections for grownups were closed. One section was closed at the Municipal Ftiziopneumology Hospital.
Even if the number of patients admitted to COVID-19 wards has decreased, the intensive therapy units continue to be crowded. Most of the persons under intensive care have comorbidies and hadn’t been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.
