Covalciuc returns to national football team

Moldovan midfielder Serghei Covalciuc will return to the national team after a 5-year absence. He was called up by coach Ion Caras for the friendly game against Belarus on February 29 in Turkey, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Covalciuc welcomed our invitation. He has great desire to play for the national team. We hope he’s in good shape”, Ion Caras told the journalists at a press conference on Friday, February 24. Covalciuc last wore the national team jersey in the fall of 2006. Since then, he refused to defend Moldova’s colors for various reasons. The 30 year old was named the best Moldovan player three times in his career. The game with Belarus will mark the beginning of Ion Caras’ second stint in charge of the national team after coaching it between 1990 and 1997. “The result matters a lot, especially for our morale. Most importantly, we must accomplish the set tasks and prepare our game for matches against England, Poland and Ukraine in the World Cup qualifiers that will begin in autumn”, said Caras. The match between Moldova and Belarus will kick-off at 7.00 PM at Mardan Palace stadium.
