Courts delay examination of cases concerning April 7, 2009 events, Mihai Ghimpu

Acting President Mihai Ghimpu criticizes the courts for delaying the examination of the two cases regarding the maltreatment of young people on April 7, 2009. “The Prosecutor General's Office opened the two cases with difficulty. Now that they were remitted to court, their examination is delayed. The hearings are held behind closed doors at a time when they should be public. I think this is due to the coming elections,” Mihai Ghimpu said in a news conference on September 15, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. He also said that the Prosecutor General's Office examined 108 complaints about the use of torture, but started criminal cases over only 58 of them. “I expect the investigations into the April 2009 events will be soon completed,” Mihai Ghimpu said. He announced that a hearing involving representatives of the Liberal Party will take place on September 16. Over a year ago, the party filed a lawsuit against former head of state Vladimir Voronin, former director of the Security and Information Service Artur Reshetnikov and ex-Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea, who accused the then Opposition parties of attempting a coup on April 7. The TV channel NIT was also sued, after broadcasting the film “Attack on Moldova”. “The Liberal Party did not stage a coup. If NIT and the others prove that we are guilty, I will ask withdrawing my parliamentary immunity. If Voronin, who gave orders, is to blame, he should also remain without immunity,” Mihai Ghimpu said. Mihai Ghimpu stated that the Prosecutor General's Office is not transparent in its work and makes the people think that nothing is done to discover the truth about the April events.
