The political class and society in general must realize the necessity of promoting women to posts in executive bodies and of more actively engaging them in decision-making, executive director of the Association of Independent Press Petru Macovei said in the program “Politics live” on Moldova 1 channel, referring to the need to set a women’s representation quota in elections, IPN reports.
Petru Macovei said that in the countries where the women’s representation in executive bodies is higher, the GDP is also higher. One of the problems that led to a lower number of women in decision-making bodies is the self-isolation from the public sphere. “Some of the women are convinced that they are marginalized by men who use their capacities only during election campaigns. That’s why many women give up fighting for their rights,” he stated.
According to Petru Macovei, it’s rather difficult to find women who want to pronounce so that their voice is heard. “It’s important to stimulate women’s activism. Civil society should deal with this,” he said.
Petru Macovei also said that even if the Moldovan government is pro-European, the women are promoted in rare cases. “The government can give an example and put forward women for high office in state institutions,” he stated, adding that the mass media should also promote the rights of women.
In February, a number of nongovernmental organizations mounted protests, demanding setting a women’s representation quota in elections of 40%.
