Councilman urges CMC to oppose Government’s decision to celebrate Wine Festival on City Day

The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) must not allow the celebration of the Wine Festival on the City Day, Oleg Cernei, councilman on behalf of the Moldova Noastra Alliance told the Council’s meeting on September 6. Besides its earthly side, a city’s day is a holy feast, when people go to church and light candles, when fighting brothers make up. The Day of Chisinau must be treated with respect by all those who are working in public institutions based in the capital city, Cernei said. He hopes that President Vladimir Voronin, a profoundly religious man, as Cernei put it, will not tolerate “the Big Booze-Up” in front of the Capital’s Cathedral, barrels with wine and public toilets around the Government building. During Cernei’s interpellation, communist councilman Veaceslav Iordan made a series of comments. When Cernei asked him what he chooses: “carousal or City Day”, Iordan said “carousal”. Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev has recently told Info-Prim Neo that it is a coincidence that this year we will have two holidays on the same day. According to the Premier, this fact should not be politicised as the Great National Assembly Square will house all the kind-hearted people. At the same time, Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca excludes any coincidence in the simultaneous organization of the two holidays. He says that this can be a new side of the conflict between the local and central authorities that arose after the communists lost the elections in the capital. The mayor says that the celebration of the two events on the same day would be regarded as defiance. Moreover, the City Day will lose ground to the Wine Day.
