Ion Duca, a councillor of Chisinau’s suburban town of Singera, is denying speculations that he had a role in making Mayor Mihai Lari commit suicide. The councillor, who is also a member of Partidul Nostru Party, has threatened to sue the outlet that made the speculation.
Duca told a press conference on Friday that he wasn’t even in Moldova when the Singera mayor committed suicide. He blamed journalists for engaging in speculations without any evidence and any conclusions of the investigation, and that in doing so they tried to tarnish his image for political reasons.
Mihai Lari, 55, was found shot to death two weeks ago in his home, with the police naming suicide as the most likely theory, but “instigation to suicide” is also considered.
The investigative paper Ziarul de Garda last week published a piece questioning the theory of Lari’s suicide, pointing out in particular that no one heard the gunshot according to witnesses and that no bullet was found. The piece also mentioned that Duca had been a vocal critic of the mayor.
