Council of Europe supports reorganization of Moldovan Ministry of Interior

The Council of Europe remains a promoter of reforms in the area of internal affairs and a supporter and guarantor of the protection of human rights in Moldova, said the new Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Birute Abraitiene, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Ministry of the Interior's press service. At a meeting with a delegation of the Council of Europe, Minister of the Interior Victor Catan spoke about the measures taken by the Ministry to combat negative social phenomena and about the steps aimed at redefining the role of the police officer in the society, especially after the April 2009 events. The minister reiterated the intention to bring the Moldovan police's work in compliance with the European standards. Birute Abraitiene welcomed the Ministry's efforts to reform the institution and stressed that the Council of Europe will provide assistance to Moldova so that it makes progress on the path to European integration. “We assure you that we will try hard to achieve the set objectives and will make sure that the people feel safe,” Victor Catan said.
