Corneliu Gurin is no longer prosecutor general

Parliament abrogated the decision by which Corneliu Gurin was appointed as prosecutor general. A special commission determined that 49 MPs voted for Gurin, not 51 as announced, IPN reports.

According to the commission’s chairman, Communist MP Anatolie Zagorodnyi, the Liberal-Democratic lawmaker Ion Butmalai said that he didn’t vote for Corneliu Gurin, but his vote was counted. His colleague Maria Ciobanu, whose vote was also counted, said that she wasn’t in the assembly hall during the voting.

“After watching the video recording, the commission established that there were given 49 votes, not 51 as declared. The Head of Parliament announced an incorrect number of votes,” said Anatol Zagorodnyi.

He also said that Corneliu Gurin does not meet the conditions needed to become prosecutor general. The commission also identified serious violations in the voting procedure.

In order to exclude vote counting errors, the commission proposed implementing an electronic system of voting in Parliament.
