Corman applauded in Comrat: European integration does not prevent us from developing good relations with East

Head of Parliament Igor Corman, in the January 22 meeting of the People’s Assembly in Comrat, which he attended together with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, assured that Moldova will continue to develop partnership relations with the CIS states, first of all with Russia, in parallel with the European integration process. He called on the authorities of Gagauzia not to cause panic in society and to continue the dialogue with the official Chisinau so as to concertedly solve the existing problems. He underlined that the parliamentary majority in Chisinau is ready to examine all the legislative problems.

Igor Corman started his speech saying that all the discussions on a possible union with Romania are an artificial problem with no real basis. The statements made by the Romanian President are not taken seriously either in his country or in Moldova. “Everyone understands that we have a common project – to develop the country and to build an independent and sovereign Moldova. We must have good relations with the neighboring countries both in the East and the West. We want to modernize and develop Moldova based on the European model. The EU also wants to have at its borders a democratic and prosperous state, whose citizens will be able to work at home,” he said.

He also said that Moldova wants now to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union, which includes the Free Trade Agreement, and to obtain a visa-free regime with the EU for its people. Similar agreements were signed with the CIS countries. The European course should not hamper the development of relations with the partners from the East, especially Russia.

Igor Corman called on the Gagauz authorities to continue the dialogue with the central authorities, assuring that the parliamentary majority wants to create a political commission that would examine the existing legislative problems.

Referring to the parliamentary elections of this year, the Speaker said he politicians should ensure calmness. “The unserious politicians think only about the future elections, while the statesmen think about the future generations,” he stated, being applauded by the members of the People’s Assembly. “We are ready to work in this direction. I hope very much that today’s visit will be a good start.”
