Controversy about appointment of Supreme Court of Justice judges
The decisions about the appointment of new judges at the Supreme Court of Justice aroused controversy inside the Alliance for European Integration. In the last sitting of the legislative body, the Liberal-Democrat MPs asked withdrawing the two bills concerning the designation of judges from the agenda. Their request bewildered their colleagues from the Alliance, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Mihai Godea, leader of the Liberal-Democrat parliamentary group, said the members of the group are not against the candidates proposed for the posts of vice president and member of the Supreme Court of Justice, but the MPs should thoroughly discuss the issue first.
Democratic Party president Marian Lupu said after the meeting that the reasons invoked by the Liberal-Democrat MPs are not clear to him. “The Supreme Council of Magistrates submitted the bills to Parliament at the start of January. In a meeting of the legal commission for appointments and immunities in February, all the representatives of the parliamentary groups of the parties that form part of the ruling alliance voted in favor of the candidates. Our Liberal-Democrat colleagues requested postponing this matter. It is a confuse situation as nobody has objections, but the bills cannot be adopted,” he stated.
The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said the Liberal lawmakers approve of the fielded candidates and have no reasons to reject them.
The names of the candidates have not been made public.
