Contest to select Supreme Court of Justice president may take place next week

The contest to fill the post of president of the Supreme Court of Justice will most probably be held next week. The term of 30 days set earlier expires on April 29. Nicolae Timofti, president of the Supreme Council of Magistrates, has told Info-Prim Neo that the Security and Information Service (SIS) has not yet provided all the information based on the examination of the files of the candidates for president of the Supreme Court of Justice. If the SIS makes the information public by May 3, the matter will be included in the agenda and the contest will take place the same day, said Nicolae Timofti. He stated that he does not know why the SIS delays providing the information. The Security and Information Service at the end of March sent a letter to the Supreme Council of Magistrates, asking for additional time for examining the file of one of the candidates for Supreme Court of Justice president, but did not say the name of the candidate. The post of president is held on an interim basis by Ion Muruianu, whose term in office expired on March 29. He will serve until Parliament appoints another person to this post. The presidency of the Supreme Court of Justice is contested by judges Ion Muruianu, Constantin Gurschi, Raisa Botezatu, and Nicolae Timofti.
