Consular taxes for Moldovan students in Romania will be reviewed, while citizenship granting agency restructured

The agency that administers the provision of Romanian citizenship will be reorganized from 2010 so that the process for Bessarabian applicants lasts for five months at the most, acting Prime Minister of Romania Emil Boc said. Asked by Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in Bucharest, the Romanian Premier said that the Government of Romania will use the necessary mechanisms to remove the unnecessary bureaucracy in this agency and enforce the law. According to Emil Boc, the Romanian administration in 2009 took a series of measures to facilitate the granting of citizenship to Moldovans and Ukrainians. A proof is the fact that many of the Bessarabian students who filed the documents during 2008-2009 have already received Romanian nationality. The situation of those who submitted the documents in 2003 and 2004 remains problematic as the information offices have been cancelled and those who want to hasten the citizenship granting process can do it only by sending an official letter to the Citizenship Division of the Romanian Ministry of Justice. At the same time, the officials of the division can give an answer in several months. “If the agency is restructured, the applications will be processed much quicker,” Emil Boc said. The Premier said the rise in consular taxes from 60 dollars to 120 euros in May is a bureaucratic problem that was misinterpreted by the employees of the Romanian Immigration Office. He said that if need be, the Government will make a decision to fix a decent consular tax rate, but did not say what rate.
