At the Prut 2 railway station, officials of the Republic of Moldova and Romania assessed the technical and logistical capacities of the container operating station during a joint visit that is part of a project to modernize the railway infrastructure and increase cross-border connectivity, IPN reports.
Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, together with Secretary of State Mircea Păscăluță and Romania’s Secretary of State Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, underlined the importance of modernizing the railway and transport infrastructure in order to increase the capacity for transporting goods, especially containerized freight. The aim is to increase export flows and improve the logistical efficiency of interstate transport.
"The Prut 2 railway station offers opportunities for transshipment and for streamlining the transport of goods to the European Union, but also for the economic development of the area by creating jobs, attracting investments and strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s role as a logistics hub," said Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania.
The officials also stressed the importance of reopening the Fălciu–Cantemir railway line, which connects southern Moldova to the Romanian railway infrastructure.
The functionaries visited the place where there will be built the Flower Bridge - the first road bridge over the Prut in the last 60 years and during the independence of the Republic of Moldova. It will be part of the Union Highway and will directly connect the Republic of Moldova to the trans-European transport network.
According to the officials, the projects to develop the railway infrastructure and connection between the two countries are meant to support the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European transport networks and stimulate economic development in the region.
"The cooperation relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova are very good and productive," said the Romanian official.
For his part, Secretary of State Mircea Păscăluță said that "this is the direction in which we are going: real connectivity, strategic partnerships and infrastructure that bring people, communities and countries closer together".
The official visit to the Prut 2 station is part of a large project that includes both the development of the railway infrastructure and the improvement of transport and connectivity between Moldova and the European Union.
