Constitutional referendum is aimed at reducing election threshold

The aim of the constitutional referendum is to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state by decreasing the election threshold, the head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said after the January 15 sitting of Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. ”We thoroughly analyzed the experience of a number of European states with authentic parliamentary regimes and established that none of these countries’ legislation blocks the process. The procedure for electing the President in every state includes several stages. The initial number of required votes is reduced if no candidates polls them or there is created an election college,” he stated. According to him, the constitutional experts will identify an optimal solution for Moldova, which will help elect the head of state and will prevent blockages. “We will go from settlement to settlement and will explain to the people why do we need to get rid of the constitutional inheritance that we received in 2000,” said Valeriu Strelet. Head of Parliament Marian Lupu said the constitutional reform will not be based on political interests, but on legal matters. “It will be built on the existent systems. It is important that we put forward a mechanism that would ensure the election of the head of state,” said Marian Lupu. He also said that in the campaign that will precede the referendum the alliance should be together. “The solution that we propose will be successful only if the ruling alliance acts together as a united force. This means that all the parties of the alliance will reach conclusions and learn lessons from the past,” stressed Marian Lupu. The constitutional referendum on simplifying the procedure for electing the head of state will take place in April.
