Constitutional Court to interpret constitutional article on official language

The Constitutional Court on December 5 will examine two challenges over Article 13 of the Constitution concerning the official language of Moldova. The challenges were submitted by the member of the parliamentary group of Liberal reformers Ana Gutu and by the Liberal faction, IPN reports.

Ana Gutu asked interpreting Article 13 of the Constitution, which says that the official language of the Republic of Moldova is Moldovan, based on the Latin script. The MP said the ‘Moldovan language’ can be semantically equaled to ‘Romanian language’ as the phrase ‘Romanian language’ is exclusively valid from scientific viewpoint and this fact was proven by contemporary linguistic researches and is applied without exception in the educational and scientific realities of Moldova.

The Liberal lawmakers said the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova, which is the juridical and political foundation of the Constriction, says that the Romanian language is the official language. “We consider that the provisions of normative acts that run counter to the Declaration of Independence should be removed by a decision of the Constitutional Court,” it is said in the Liberals’ challenge.

The Constitutional Court is to pronounce on the two challenges the same day.
