Constitutional Court to examine validity of December 16 election on Thursday

The Constitutional Court is to examine on Thursday, January 12, the constitutionality of the presidential election on December 16, in response to an objection by MP Mihai Godea, president of the Democratic Action Party, Info-Prim Neo reports. Godea objected that the constitutional principle of the secret vote was violated when the parliamentarians exposed their ballots to public viewing. In particular, Godea claimed that “constitutional, legal and procedural rules were breached during the December 16 election, which manifested in acts, statements and pressures”. In his opinion, the special parliamentary commission in charge of the election should have stopped from the very beginning the voting process when the ballots were exposed and should have invalidated them in concert with Parliament. On December 16, Mihai Godea was the only parliamentarian who kept his vote secret. The other parliamentarians showed their ballots on the request of Democrat leader Marian Lupu.
