Constitutional Court to decide whether to register or not candidates for presidency

Should the December 16 elections be deemed unconstitutional, it will not be necessary to register the candidates who want to run in the January 15 elections, Tudor Deliu, chairman of the special commission for organizing the presidential elections, said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “Provided that the Constitutional Court decides that the Article on secret voting was infringed in the previous elections, the Parliament will have to take a decision to abrogate the decision of December 28, when the date of the new presidential elections was agreed. The procedure will be thus repeated and a new date for ordinary presidential elections will be set,” Tudor Deliu said shortly after the parliamentary groups’ meeting on Wednesday. Only Marian Lupu ran for President in the December 16 elections, but he failed to poll the required number of votes. The lawmakers of the governing alliance agreed to show the ballot papers before throwing them into the ballot box in order to prove that they had voted, and so they did. Independent MP Mihai Godea considered that the secrecy of voting had been violated and filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court. The Court is to pronounce on the issue on Thursday, January 12. The same day is the deadline for submitting applications for being registered as candidates for the presidency.
