Constitutional Court rules Mihai Ghimpu named Acting President legally

The Constitutional Court on October 27 decided that Mihai Ghimpu was legally appointed as Acting President of Moldova on the same day when the former head of state Vladimir Voronin tendered his resignation, as the post fell vacant, Info-Prim Neo reports. The parliamentary group of the Communists Party (PCRM) challenged the legality of naming Ghimpu as Caretaker President before the confirmation of the vacancy by the Constitutional Court. The PCRM asked the Court to interpret the Constitution, to rule if the Constitutional Court's assent is mandatory and when the Parliament should fill in the vacancy. The Court ruled that its decision is consultative and that the post of head of state can be occupied immediately after it becomes vacant. Mihai Ghimpu was appointed Acting President of Moldova on September 11, on the same day when Vladimir Voronin offered his resignation.
