Constitutional Court president leaves council for reform of justice
The president of the Constitutional Court Dumitru Pulbere decided to withdraw from the national council for the reform of the legal system that was constituted by Acting President Marian Lupu on May 19. In a communiqué, the Court says the judge sent a letter to the Acting President, informing him about his decision, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Under Article 135 of the Constitution of Moldova, the Constitutional Court at request checks the constitutionality of the laws and decisions of Parliament, decrees of the President of Moldova and orders and decisions of the Government as well as of the international treaties ratified by Moldova, and pronounces on the initiatives to amend the Constitution. Thus, I consider that the position of president of the Constitutional Court I hold and the post of member of the national council for the reform of the legal system are incompatible,” Dumitru Pulbere explained in his letter to Marian Lupu.
Initially, the national council for the reform of the legal system consisted of 30 members, including lawmakers, judges, representatives of the law enforcement bodies and leaders of specialized NGOs. Shortly afterward, Communist MPs Serghei Sarbu and Maria Postoiko withdrew from the council. Dumitru Pulbere is the third member that leaves the given body.
Constitutional Court judge Alexandru Tanase will continue to work on the council after Dumitru Pulbere’s withdrawal.
